THE LATE ANTIQUE AND MIDDLE AGES

THE LATE ANTIQUE AND MIDDLE AGES.

The late antique and Middle Ages part mounted in the museum of Altamura makes reference almost entirely to the paleochristian site of Belmonte. It stands on a Murge relief, placed along the provincial road to Cassano. During the archaeological digging besides the basilica and the necropolis, an extremely rare submersible baptistery emerged. It has a distinctive framework and it is considered a valuable point of reference for the early Christian architecture. A cross-shaped pendant, with precious stones and vitreous paste comes from this site. It dates back to the VIth - VIIth century A.D.
